LOCAL BANDS GAIN WORLDWIDE PROFILE… Art Brut, headed by ex Martin Kemp-Welch (Rossmore) pupil, Kevin Macklin, who is now known as Eddie Argos, has become one of the most promising British bands Worldwide, and have a cult status in the UK (check out their Myspace site to find out where they are touring NOW!). The band was picked up on by the late John Peel back in 2003, and have done several sessions on Radio One, and BBC 6 Music . Marc Riley (The Boy Lard) is a particular fan. The band features frequently in the NME, and seem to be constantly touring around the World.

Art Brut is arguably an influence on many current bands. Listen to either of their albums and you might recognise the bands they might have influenced (and Art Brut’s influences from alternative acts from the late 70s to the early 90s!).

The pre-curser of Art Brut, The Art Goblins, made their first appearance back in 1998 supporting a Poole Music Festival (myspace) fundraiser at The Central, Ashley Cross, which was headlined by Parkstone’s Circa.

AIR TRAFFIC (from Bournemouth) (myspace), named after the interference they picked up on their bass amp from Hurn Airport Air Traffic Control, have had several hit singles, been featured on BBC Radio One, Two, and 6 Music, and released their first album “Fractured Life” in June 2007 (one week after Art Brut released their second album “It’s A Bit Complicated”). These two successful bands are just the tip of the iceberg. Check out the Poole Music pages for some background info, useful links, and tips on bands to watch. Click the logo above or the link at the foot of the page. AIR TRAFFIC played a homecoming gig at The Opera House on 26th January 2008.

New Park Taking Shape

Late in 2007 Alderney Rec. was renamed Bourne Valley Park. The project that has transformed the area can be traced back to a series of meetings that took place in 2002. Residents were fed up with the poor drainage and misuse of an area of former football pitches. They contacted ward councillors about the problems, and with the support of their councillors they held regular meetings at residents homes that also involved Council Officers and the then Portfolio Holder for Leisure Graham Wilson. £50,000 of developer contributions was earmarked towards a scheme. A change of Council control in 2003 led to a halt in progress, but thanks to a multi agency organisation - The Bourne Stream Partnership, and a desire by Wessex Water to build a flood alleviation scheme (flood alleviation in action – click here), the scheme started to take off big time. £176,000 has been spent to date on opening up a piped stream, building flood retainers, improving footpaths and seating, a viewpoint, wildflower meadow, and last but not least a fishing lake with disabled access. Phase one of the scheme came to an end on 12th October 2007 when 500 assorted Rudd and Mirror Carp were released into the lake.
