The site editor got into French modern jazz back in the late 80s when he heard Louis Sclavis’s “Chine”. This music crosses barriers between rock, jazz, classical, folk and world music. Henri Texier (two of his releases pictured above) is one of the longest established exponents of the genre. The best of this music deserves to be as well known in this country as that of Miles Davies (who perfected his art in France). Look out for Label Bleu in the better record shops or visit their web site.

 NOW THE LIGHTHOUSE

The Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth may be just over an hours drive away but represents the nearest place (at the time!) to Poole and Bournemouth where you can hear up and coming SIGNED bands on a regular basis. Check out their web site for details of what's coming up.

Mr Kyps plays it safe (in this musically conservative area) most of the time putting on covers bands and acts from years gone by that are still on the road. They do however put on the occasional originals local band and host BOTB contests. This is a well laid out venue which we hope to see more of.  www.mrkyps.net

LOCAL BANDS THAT HAVE PLAYED AT PMF GIGS…

Circa have grown with Poole Music Festival. In a former incarnation as a young band perfecting their craft playing Radiohead, Manics, and REM covers "Flashboy" were the very first band to play the first Poole Music Festival in 1997. They have played at all the festival / music weeks to date, played throughout the UK, and were (remain?) this area's brightest hopes for big time recognition (though competition is getting tougher as the best of the local bands just keep getting better!).

The Molby K's have impressed many at their PMF gigs (including well seasoned pros), and at regular London dates, with their finely crafted power pop.

POOLE BASED INDEPENDANT RECORD LABEL 25 RECORDS has been championing alternative acts for some time now. They issue regular compilation CDs. You can find information about them, and some appalling jokes, on their Web Site - www.25records.com

Dan T's Inferno are an off the wall band (or are they a collective?). Check out their recent (2000) CD EP "Native Narratives", and check out their web pages at - www.25records.com/dant

The Adored were making a lot of new friends, though they just missed out on an appearance at the festival. They had a demo on the PMF "Audio File" page.

We are uncertain if the band called The Adored from Southern California are in anyway related to the above band but as the original link still functions we will leave it there.

AUTUMN are another accomplished band in the indie / rock mould. As of late 1999 they had just released a strong three track CD "Bearskins" that would not be out of place on Steve Lamacq's Evening Session. It's gone a bit quiet during the first part of 2000 but it is rumoured that an album is in the offing.

UPDATE – Autumn morphed into another band in 2001 but “Bearskins” is still one of the best demos we received in those early years and deserves to be somewhere on the web. We will see what we can do.

Moo-Masters are a hot new funk / rock band. The Chilli Peppers have often been mentioned in the same breath but these guys seem to inject more joy and sparkle to the genre. If you have heard the polished sophisticated "Counting Crows-ish" vibe of the sadly defunct Moreno (much raved about by Album Zone), you will find it hard to believe that this is a similar line up. It is even harder to believe that these guys are still only 17 (as of mid 2000). Check out - www.geocities.com/moo_masters

Orchid Dawn are pure theatre. They sing like the girl talks in The Exorcist. This is goth metal at it's best. It's amazing what goes on in the wilds of West Dorset (remember PJH!). Music to sell your soul to! - POSTER

THE PRODUCERS were one of the top R&B / Blues bands in the Country. Although based in Poole The Producers toured throughout the UK, Europe, and beyond, appearing at major Blues Festivals as well as conventional indoor gigs.

G13 Jazzy D&B / Hip-Hop vibes. Veterans of two Poole Music Festivals and fundraiser.

Absolute Darlings are hard to categorise. Folk tinged and spacey? Just n-joi!

FROM OUTSIDE THE AREA…

THE MUTTON BIRDS headlined the Sunday Night at the 1998 Poole Music Festival. Hailing from New Zealand where they enjoy a much higher profile, the band have their own distinctive folk tinged rock sound, comparable to early (IRS) R.E.M, The Saw Doctors, and Crowded House. Current web site (2006) – www.muttonbirds.co.nz

TIM ROSE headlined the Saturday Night gig at the 1998 Poole Music Festival. Your Webmaster can honestly say that the gig was truly spellbinding, one of the best I have ever been to. Add the fact that "Morning Dew" is one of the greatest singles ever, if you never heard Tim live you’ve missed out big time! Tim sadly passed away in 2002.

Tim Rose is one of a number of artists featured on a web site dedicated to those who have not received the acclaim they deserve. Others featured include Ritchie Havens (remember "Mona"?). Check the site out.
