Poole Music 2000 - Live Bands, DJs, and Skateboards…

Poole Music 2000 was the most successful event yet. It was launched against the backdrop of two major visiting acts (James and Paul Weller) and comprised of no less than 40 gigs around the town. These ranged from regular pub gigs, a dark metal Halloween special (Orchid Dawn headlining), major jazz acts, blues, indie, rock, and top DJ sets. Lots of "percussive" things, skateboards, multimedia effects, and BMX tricks crowned the second weekend.

The Friday Night Indie / Rock Showcase in the Wessex Hall featured seven of the top bands from the area attracting a record crowd AND a celebrity ligger! (Mark Little aka Joe Mangle digging Pure.) A rare stage invasion during a rousing set by the Moo Masters gave the Arts Centre security men a brief piece of action. Great sound and video / lighting effects ensured that this was a full on major gig.

The Saturday Daytime "Sk8'n'Jam" and accompanying "Carnival" included a range of stalls, an indoor BMX / skate ramp, various stands, plus live bands and DJs. It also helped the "Funseeker" appeal raise around £3,000 towards the skate park being built at Baiter. Particular congratulations should go to Conrad Barr who organised the live bands (Fri & Sat), and Roz Jones who put together most of the rest of the daytime events in the Wessex on

Saturday Evenings "Breakfluid Live" gave clubbers a chance to set Poole Arts Centre pumping. Bentley Rhythm Ace DJs, Freestylers Sound System, and Danmass headined this dance event.

Roz Jones…

It was with great sadness that we heard about the untimely death of Roz Jones back in February. Roz was a powerhouse who made an enormous contribution to the last two festivals, in 1999 as the liason person with The Big Issue, and last year as the main organiser of the Saturday Skate'n'Jam raising £3,500 for the "Funseeker" Skateboard Park appeal. As the daughter of the then current serving mayor of Poole, Cllr. Joyce Jones, she was also heavily involved in fundraising for the Mayor's Charity Appeal which included the current "Ladybird" (Breast Cancer) Appeal. She will be sadly missed. A book of condolence was set up on a Web Site created by Roz - www.sixpics.com.

Now in its second year, the Poole Skate Fest will be held on 12 May 2002 at Baiter Park in Poole. The festival is sponsored by Eastpak and combines best trick competitions in Skateboarding, Inline and BMX with the prime new UK music talent ranging from Hip Hop to Punk - making it one of the most talked about events on the South Coast.

Admission is free and with over 5000 people attending last year you can be sure that it will once again be a day which is not to be missed. The best trick showdowns will take place throughout the day and the prize purse is stuffed with over £1500.

Alongside the comps, there will be other forms of entertainment to keep you occupied throughout the day. The live music stage showcases some of the best up'n'coming UK punk, metal and hardcore bands including: Onedice, Freebase 4FT. Fingers, SNUB, Fletcher, Captain Everything, Route215, Isen and Budmeiser. The Hip Hop stage is hosted by Breakfluid which means you can expect some decent tunes to be dropped by the likes of: Tom Dollar, D.J.M, X-Rated (DMC finalist), Zero and Tinkabell
plus suppport from MC Wrec and special guests.

In addition to all this, there will be workshops, graffiti walls, breakdance (UK champions Second to None) merchandise stalls, food, a fully licensed bar, pro-displays, sideshows (the Miniscule of Sound – the world’s smallest nightclub), give-aways and loads more for which there is not enough room to cover here.

The event is completely run by volunteers and all profits will go back into the community to improve the skatepark facilities at Baiter.

Local Lad Makes Good…

Chart watchers in the UK will have noticed a new name in the upper reaches of the charts. Gordon Haskell, (a young hopeful of 54), was held off the number one slot at Christmas by someone called Robbie Williams singing a duet with an equally obscure Nicole Kidman J , somethin' stupid I guess. Now Gordon has crashed the album charts at No. 2 with his album "Harry's Bar". Gordon last brushed with the big time in the late sixties early seventies with his association with King Crimson (a band that still retains strong local links that include "Mr Toyah" Robert Fripp). Gordon has continued working in the intervening years as a session musician and playing regular gigs in local pubs. It was BBC Radio 2 DJ Johnny Walker that championed his single which was consequently released through East West (Warner Bros.) Records in time for the lucrative Christmas singles market. PROOF that it is never too late to hit the big time if you are good and keep at it (PMF favourites take note!!!).

Did You Know… that it was another local lad, Greg Lake (ex King Crimson & ELP), that continues to get regular seasonal airplay and space on endless compilations with "I Believe In Father Christmas"?

Poole Came Out Into The Open in 2001!

Following the successful open air events on Poole Quay, the weekly Beach Events at Sandbanks during July and August, and "Groove on the Green" in Parkstone Park, Ashley Cross, Poole got more open air action. A live music, DJ, and Skate Festival took place on Sunday 12th August 2001 at Baiter Park in Poole. The event was held in honour of Roz Jones who was the human dynamo behind many events including last year's "Skate'n'Jam" during Poole Music 2000. Money raised will go to local skatepark projects including the "2theXstream" project planned for the Kemp Welch / Rossmore Community College campus. For further details check out their web site - www.funseeker.org.uk.

Poole Music 2001 became "Almost Famous" for a weekend (Friday 19th October to Sunday 21st October 2001) at Poole Arts Centre. It featured two free showcases on the Friday Evening ("Solid Air Live"), and Saturday 12noon to 6pm ("Rubber Soul" and "SK8'n'JAM"). Saturday Evening saw the return of the hugely popular DJ / Live extravaganza "Breakfluid Live". The weekend also featured workshops and a DJ surgery.

Sunday Evening in the Wessex Hall featured the London Gospel Community Choir (as famously featured on Blur's "Tender" and elsewhere) with Jazz Legend Courtney Pine.

Poole Bands Take To The Airwaves…

In the run up to the 1999 Poole Music Festival several Poole area band demos were featured on Merlin Network One, a short wave radio station using BBC World Service transmitters, also on satellite and on the world wide web. The show was Album Zone (Johnny Reece) and was heard throughout the world. Just before the festival there was a one hour special featuring local and guest bands appearing at the event.

 - Circa Gig Triumph

The Central Hotel in Parkstone was the scene of Circa's first local gig for 2002. This follows a gig the night before at Dingwalls in Camden (as immortalised by The Stranglers 1977 hit "London Lady"). Circa were supported by favourites from John Peel's Festive Fifty for 2001 Miss Black America. As you would expect in a venue the size of The Central it was a sell out.

The one bit of sad news that took some of the gloss away was that it was drummer extraordinaire Greg Moxham's last gig with the band after four years. Greg is moving to London. We wish him well.

MBA HIT TOWN…

Right - Just prior to their most recent local gig (Sept' 20th 2002) at Mr Smiths… MISS BLACK AMERICA who appeared with full support including Parkstone heroes TEX LA HOMA visited a local skate park.

Pictured left to right… Griff (TLH) Gish, Seymour, & Neil (three quarters of MBA) at the "2theXstreme" (Rossmore) Skate Park. The new MBA album came out on September 16th titled "God Bless Miss Black America" on the superb Integrity Records.

The Miss Black America album "God Bless Miss Black America" was released Monday 16th September 2002. What The Guardian said...

"Bury St Edmunds' finest already have a reputation as shouty punk rockers, but their debut suggests there is more in their locker. With ace guitarist Gish shimmering for England and vocalist Seymour Glass perfecting a balance between angst and anger, much of God Bless sounds like the more mature Manic Street Preachers playing U2's Boy. Pocket manifestos such as Infinite Chinese Box rage convincingly; however, their more restrained moments are most interesting. Roadkill sees Glass unveiling what may be the World's first angry croon. Better still is Car Crash For A Soul, which packs a dissection of Western capitalism ("Shopping's just like sex in pornos, urgent and joyless") into three rollercoasting minutes." - Dave Simpson, The Guardian, 13th September 2002

SAD NEWS… Legendary Singer / Songwriter TIM ROSE (Hey Joe & Morning Dew being his best known contributions to the art!), who played a stunning gig at The Central for Poole Music Festival back in 1998, died on September 24th last. Unfortunately yours truly missed all the obituaries in the "quality" press and only found out as the result of someone E Mailing the John Peel Show on Radio One. You can catch up with these tributes via the Tim Rose Web Site www.timrose.net or the fan based site on our links page (the site also includes the recently re-discovered Ritchie Havens). Meanwhile all I can say is that The Central gig in 1998 was one of the small handful of the best gigs I have ever been to. Stunning and electric were not over statements.

IT’S ALL HAPPENING… Poole's live music scene has finally attracted big time attention. Five years ago it was just the magnificent Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, which by then was fully based in Poole flying the flag for Poole's music scene. Now just five years after the first Poole Music Festival there is regular live music on Poole Quay, Baiter Park, Sandbanks, and later this Summer Canford Arena. Then there's Circa, Candlefire, Dan T's Inferno - some serious "Rock School" contenders, and lots more waiting to burst into the national consciousness.

also check out… local based record label "Superglider". They have already created interest in the national music press with a release from "Tex La Homa". Watch out for Electro band "Seamonster" also on Superglider who supported the equally excellent "Exhibit A" at The Central a while back. More proof of the well of talent waiting to be tapped into in the Poole / Bournemouth area. Check out www.superglider.com where you can also hear samples of their roster.

THURSDAY NIGHTS FROM MAY - Music on Poole Quay and Sandbanks alternate weeks till Sept. The Quay events focus on music with all types featured and a particularly strong Jazz vibe, the Sandbanks events will be more "carnival" like. From July the events will step up a gear with even more happening. Watch out for details on these pages from time to time or check out www.pooletourism.com.

Arena Opening In Summer - Are we talking the "Magna Bowl"?

The new open air arena for sports and entertainment off Magna Road in North Poole looks set to open later this summer. The first music event is rumoured to be earmarked for the August Bank Holiday. The site (which was earmarked to host the first Poole Music Festival in 1997 but due to the fears of a few was "financially discouraged") is said to be capable of taking 100,000 people, but with it's restricted infrastructure this is likely to be restricted to nearer 10,000. Some press coverage of the proposal goes over the top with talk of U2 and Oasis gigs, but drop a division or two and it all looks possible! We look forward to seeing the original concept of PMF become a reality on this superb site.

MEANWHILE BACK IN POOLE MUSIC… there is unlikely to be a full event in 2002 due to massive refurbishment works at Poole Arts Centre. A smaller "pub" type event may take place but any major plans are most likely to be postponed to the late Summer or Autumn 2003, though options will still be kept open in case a suitable venue and sponsorship is unexpectedly offered or found. WATCH THIS SPACE!

Still, look on the bright side - At least Poole is supporting the upgrading of It's major arts venue rather than demolishing it for profit like a certain nearby town! You can comment on this, or any other MUSIC related subjects, below. No more crafty ads or porn links please you sad perverts!!!

2003

New Monthly Club Night from 7th March 2003 a new monthly club night started at The Pier Showbar, Bournemouth (that seedy suburb to the East of Poole). Called Rogue Beats the first show featured a guest appearance by the Lo Fidelity All-stars DJ set. This was well received although not as well attended as had been hoped by the organisers. The next event on Friday April 4th will feature a DJ set from The Herbaliser. Be there or watch another great event sink into the sea!

MEANWHILE… throughout April (2003) Poole based chart denting band Candlefire will be playing a series of Friday Night gigs at The Central (the true centre of the Universe!!!), Ashley Cross, Parkstone which will also feature showcase sessions for other up-coming bands. Candlefire are currently working on a first album with a major league producer, and have a follow up single to “Sorrow Spreads It’s Wings” called “Jennifer” due out in August. If you haven’t been to The Central lately you will notice some changes. Live Music Champion Dave, and Sandra, have left for pastures new, and the new “hosts” have gone mad with the paintbrush. By the way… ADMISSION IS FREE!

July 2002. In the shops…

Monday July 29th 2002… Poole Band Candlefire got a nationwide single release. "Sorrow Spreads It's Wings" on One Little Indian Records (who launched amongst others Bjork and Skunk Anansie). It was available at all good record shops (HMV it is priced at £1.99 till the end of the first week - 3rd August). It is still available at a few shops @ £2.99 - Buy it!

The single just charted in the top 100 and has been assured a follow up. Here's an opportunity to bring the record biz here to check out our pool of talent. It's a long time since King Crimson, Greg Lake, and Andy Summers. Gordon Haskell has done it for MOR, Slinky has done it for dance, - let's do it for new live music!
