A Sustainable Future?

We are all well aware of the impending environmental problems. The planet is warming at an ever increasing rate, and our energy supplies are diminishing. Added to that there is a worldwide economic downturn. To many this is just an early wake up call. We need to find a way of living comfortably, but in a way that can be sustained environmentally and economically.

One thing that is certain is that we cannot rely on Government to deliver the changes required. Governments are timid, afraid of the media, afraid of public disapproval, afraid of being voted out. These are real concerns. Only people power can give them the confidence to take real meaningful action. There are some promising signs, at least in the short term, as Barack Obama, who is intelligent enough to realise that there is a problem that needs addressing, enjoys a honeymoon period with the US voters.

Sadly a lot of people do not accept the realities we face. They will seek easy answers, look for scapegoats, and may be tempted to turn to extremist parties who will be only too ready to take advantage of people’s anxieties.

We live at a crossroads, or possibly a fork in the road. Ultimately the future of our civilisation is at stake. If we take the right road we will move to a different, but ultimately rewarding, lifestyle – but which road is the right one? Our challenge is to identify the right road AND stick to it for the sake of future generations. Those of us who duck the issues now, whilst we can still make a difference, will not be appreciated by those in the future who live with our legacy.
